Richard and Pat Johnson Palm Beach County Historical Museum
The Richard and Pat Johnson Palm Beach County History Museum is a historical museum in West Palm Beach, Florida. Exhibits and collections at the museum span local history and number in the millions. The Palm Beach County Historical Society operates the museum, which is located on the third floor of the 1916 Old Courthouse.
History
The Richard and Pat Johnson Palm Beach County Historical Museum is currently housed in the historic "old county courthouse," which was built in 1916 and completed in 1917. The Palm Beach County Courthouse was previously housed in an old school building in West Palm Beach. After World War II, houses were built around the original structure, and by 1972, the old structure was completely surrounded. A new building across the street was completed in 2002, and the old building fell into disrepair. The community was pushing to preserve Palm Beach County's history at the time, and the county council voted to spend nearly $20 million on restoration. Restoration work began in 2004, with the demolition of the additions surrounding the old house.
