Peabody Essex Museum

 Peabody Essex Museum

The Peabody Essex Museum is an art museum in Salem, Massachusetts. It was founded with a donation from George Peabody and was once directed by Edward S. Morse.

Captains and cargo supervisors formed the East India Seamen's Association in 1799. Its members were required by charter to collect "natural and man-made curiosities" in the region beyond the Cape of Good Hope and Cape Horn. The Peabody Museum merged with the Essex Institute in 1992 to form the Peabody Essex Museum.
