The Belz Museum's History
Mr. Jack Belz, chairman and CEO of Belz Enterprises, and his wife Marilyn began collecting Asian art in 1968 after visiting a Los Angeles Asian art gallery. Their collection had grown significantly over the course of several years. The concept of a museum did not emerge until 1995. That year, Jack Belz agreed to donate a portion of their collection to a temporary exhibition at Memphis' Pink Palace Museum. The exhibit was part of a companion exhibit to the Wonders: Imperial Tombs of China exhibition, which was on display at the Cook Convention Center. The foundation had been established by 1998, and the museum was originally known as Peabody Place Museum. Today, The collection at Belz Museum demonstrates their passion for collecting.
