Joslyn Museum of Art

Joslyn Museum of Art

The Joslyn Art Museum (in English: Joslyn Art Museum) is an art museum in Omaha, Nebraska. It was founded in 1931 at the initiative of Sarah H. Joslyn in memory of her husband, businessman George A. Joslyn, 2 and houses exceptional collections from the 19th and 20th centuries, including works by Paolo Veronese, El Greco, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, William-Adolphe Bouguereau, and Titian.

History
A coffee and gift shop is located in the museum's glass atrium (west view). Chihuly: Inside and Out, a play by Dale Chihuly, can be seen in the background.
Kiewit started building the museum in 1928. 3 The grand opening took place on November 29, 1931, at 4 p.m. Sarah H. Joslyn gave it to the people of Omaha in memory of her husband, George A. Joslyn. It is housed in a large Art Deco building near downtown Omaha designed by John and Alan McDonald and built in pink Georgian marble with 38 different marbles from around the world. The exterior decorative panels were designed by sculptor Juan David Brcin and depict the Plains peoples—the original Native Americans—as well as later European explorers and settlers. Hartley Burr Alexander wrote the inscriptions carved on the building. In 1994, Norman Foster designed a substantial addition. The Joslyn Sculpture Garden began construction in 2008. It first opened in the summer of 2009, just in time for the annual "Jazz on the Green" festival. The garden includes artwork by both local and national artists, as well as a reflecting pool and waterfall. The garden is now home to "Jazz on the Green," which has been held every summer in July and August for the past 25 years. The festival, which lasts eight weeks, features local, regional, and national jazz musicians..The event is free and draws thousands of spectators who come to sit and enjoy a bottle of wine and appetisers. 7 Since 2010, Omaha Performing Arts has taken over the event and relocated it to the Midtown Crossing at Turner Park, which has been developed to better accommodate the growing event.
