cirque du soleil

cirque du soleil

Cirque du Soleil (in Portuguese, Circus of the Sun) is a Canadian multinational entertainment company headquartered in Montreal. It was founded in June 1984 in Baie-Saint-Paul by street artists Guy Laliberté and Gilles Ste-Croix, and it is now the world's largest circus company.

Creation
Cirque de Soleil was founded in Baie-Saint-Paul in 1984 by street artists Guy Laliberté and Daniel Gauthier in response to an appeal made by the Quebec government's Commissariat général aux célébrations 1534-1984 to commemorate the 460th anniversary of the discovery of Canada by the French explorer Jacques Cartier. Guy Laliberté purchased a portion of the circus owned by Gauthier, who now owns the Le Massif ski area on the Saint Lawrence River, in 2000. Cirque du Soleil is currently managed by Guy Laliberté, who owns 95% of the company's assets and is on Forbes magazine's list of billionaires. The Grand Tour du Cirque du Soleil was a huge success in 1984, and after two years of preparation,Guy Caon of the National Circus School assisted Laliberté in recreating circus art in a unique manner. Each Cirque du Soleil performance is the pinnacle of circus innovation, with its own storyline, setting, and costumes, as well as live music during performances. Cirque expanded rapidly between 1990 and 2000, from a show with 73 performers in 1984 to more than 3,500 employees in more than 40 countries, 15 shows running concurrently, and annual revenue estimated at $ 800 million.

History
Cirque du Soleil founder Guy Laliberté began touring Europe as a musician and street artist while pursuing a career as a performing artist. He learned the art of breathing fire when he returned to Canada in 1967. He was only employed for three days on a hydroelectric construction project, but he paid his unemployment insurance on time. He then assisted in the organisation of a summer bazaar with his friends Daniel Gauthier and Gilles Ste-Croix. Gauthier and Ste-Croix were coordinating a hostel for artists and performers called Le Balcon Vert at the time. Ste-Croix decided to tour with his band in 1979. Despite the artists' talent, the troupe lacked the necessary funds to complete the project, so the group decided to approach the Quebec government for assistance.Les Échassiers de Baie-Saint-Paul was founded by the three. Les Échassiers, a group of artists, toured Quebec during the summer of 1980.
