Central Park Zoo

Central Park Zoo

Central Park Zoo is a small 6.5-acre (2.6 ha) zoo in New York's Central Park. It is run by the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS), which also runs New York City's four zoos and the New York Aquarium and is a member of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA). When it first opened in the 1860s, the Central Park Zoo was a zoo and a show house for animals. It became a zoo in 1934, and many facilities were built around the square sea lion pool . The park was completely renovated in 1988, improving the natural environment and replacing the dilapidated cages.

The three main exhibition areas (tropical, temperate, and polar) are linked by a trellis or glass-roofed pergola, and the animal house is vine-covered and made of sober granite brickwork. A rain forest house, a leaf-cutting ant house, a child penguin house, a polar bear pool, and breeding programmers for endangered species such as tamarins, Wyoming toads, large-billed parakeets, and red pandas are among the animal houses. Fruit bats and birds are also kept in large bird nets at the Rainforest Pavilion. A snow leopard exhibit opened in June 2009. The Paul Manship-designed children's zoo gate is one of the few pre-renovation structures still standing.
