Toledo Museum Of Art

Toledo Museum of Art

The Toledo Museum of Art (English: Toledo Museum of Art) is a museum in Toledo, Ohio, located in the Old West End neighborhood.
The museum was founded in 1901 by Toledo glass maker Edward Drummond Libbey and relocated to its current location in 1912, a Renaissance building designed by Edward B. Green and Harry W. Wachter. In the 1920s and 1930s, the structure was expanded twice.
Brian Kennedy is the institution's current director, having served as the ninth director since its inception in 2010.

collection

The museum houses large collections of American and European glass art from the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, as well as small but distinct collections of Renaissance, Greek and Roman, and Japanese art.

Individual works of note include The Coronation of Saint Catherine by Peter Paul Rubens, which Albert Koppel purchased in 1950; Adoration of the Magi by Bartolomé Esteban Murillo, minor works by Rembrandt and El Greco, and works by Willem de Kooning, Henry Moore, and Sol LeWitt.

Glass Pavilion and Visual Arts Center

In the 1990s, a visual arts center designed by Frank Gehry was added. It houses the museum's library as well as a studio, office, and classroom for the University of Toledo's art department.

The architectural firm SANAA was chosen in 2000 to design a new building to house the museum's glass collection. Front Inc. was in charge of assisting the architects in developing technical concepts for the glass wall systems. The Glass Pavilion opened to critical acclaim in 2006. Nicolai Ouroussoff wrote in a New York Times review, "composed with exquisite delicacy, the elegant labyrinth of curved glass walls represents the latest monument to evolve, in a chain that runs all the way back."
The pavilion was made possible through the largest fundraising campaign in Toledo's history.

events

The museum is also in charge of organizing various types of events on its grounds. Every day, there are guided tours of the museum, activities at the family center, interactive activities with the public ("hands-on activities"), and glass art workshops.

There is also a weekly schedule for the museum. The TMA Thursday takes place on Thursdays, an event that leaves the entrance doors open for a longer period of time, designed to attract people aged 24 to 45.  It's Friday is held on Fridays and extends the museum's opening hours, but with additional activities that vary depending on the week.
The Toledo Museum of Art has earned a global reputation for the quality of its collections, innovative and extensive education programmer, and architecturally significant campus since its inception in 1901. TMA is a privately endowed, non-profit institution that opens its collection to the public for free thanks to the generosity of its founders and the ongoing support of its members. The Museum aspires to be the model art museum in the country, paving the way for genuine and creative community engagement and fostering a sense of belonging for all audiences.
