Portland Museum Of Art

Portland Museum Of Art

The Portland Museum of Art (abbreviated PMA) is a US cultural institution located in downtown Portland, Maine.  It is the largest and oldest arts institution in the state.

It was founded in 1882 in the city's Arts District and remained in that form until 1908, when Margaret Jane Mussey Sweat bequeathed her three-story mansion, now known as McLellan House, to the museum. As a result, she wanted to honor her late husband, Lorenzo De Medici Sweat, a former member of the United States House of Representatives. The LDM Sweat Memorial Galleries were designed by New England architect John Calvin Stevens and opened to the public in 1911.Charles Shipman Payson, a Portland resident, donated 17 paintings by Homer Winslow to the museum in 1976 and allocated $ 8 million for its reconstruction. The Charles Shipman Payson Building was designed by architect Henry Nichols Cobb (eng.) of IM Pei & Partners (eng. ); construction began in 1981 and was completed two years later. Payson's gift established a precedent for expanding the museum's collection, and new works of art began to arrive.

The Portland Museum is now a cultural center and a vital art resource for residents of Maine and New England. Its collection contains over 17,000 decorative and fine art objects dating from the 18th century to the present. It is visited by approximately

The PMA Roadmap

The Portland Museum of Art's campus expansion and unification project is called The PMA Blueprint: Building A Landmark For The Future. Through construction at 142 Free Street, the project aims to unify the museum's downtown Portland, Maine campus. The PMA Blueprint, the museum's first expansion in over 40 years, will add 60,000 square feet of flexible, community, gallery, and public space, allowing for 300,000-500,000 visitors per year.

PLANNING YOUR VISIT

Please keep in mind that Congress Square, as well as High, Free, and Congress streets, are undergoing a multi-year redevelopment and construction project by the City of Portland. Traffic patterns and pedestrian accessibility are being disrupted as a result of this project. The PMA remains open during regular hours, but caution and forethought are required to navigate the changing landscape around the museum.
