Houston Zoo

 Houston Zoo

The Houston Zoo is a 55-acre (22-hectare) zoological park in Hermann Park in Houston, Texas, United States. The zoo is home to around 6,000 animals from over 600 different species. It is the second most visited zoo in the United States, with 2.1 million people each year. The Association of Zoos and Aquariums has accredited it (AZA).

The goal statement of the Houston Zoo is "The Houston Zoo links communities with animals, encouraging action to safeguard nature."

The zoo has been run by the non-profit company Houston Zoo since 2002, after being run by the City of Houston prior.

The animals are typically kept together in outdoor cages depending on geographic factors, much like their native habitats. A reptile and amphibian house, as well as an insectarium, can be found in larger structures ( bug house ). The facilities are continually being updated to meet evolving international rules for species-appropriate animal husbandry. Significant upgrades are planned for the zoo's 100th anniversary in 2022 to give it an especially appealing appearance for the event. During construction, certain structures will be temporarily closed, and affected animals will be relocated to improvised shelters. A new one, the fauna of the Galapagos Islands, is to honour the anniversary dedicated facility to be opened under the name Galápagos Islands. Virtual zoo tours and animal films are available through educational initiatives.

The Houston Zoo contributes to approximately 50 conservation initiatives in 27 countries across the world. [1] Texas is also implementing resettlement initiatives. The protection of the extremely endangered Houston toad is of great significance ( Anaxyrus houstonensis ). The zoo employs two workers who are solely responsible for the toad programme. This programme has been in place since 2007, and the Houston Zoo is home to roughly 600 Houston toads. Breeding couples are formed in February of each year. After mating, the spawning threads contain 4,000 to 10,000 eggs apiece. The fertilised spawning lines are gathered in special transport containers and stored in ponds in Bastrop County. For example, in 2020, 899,700 eggs were released in this manner.
