Sedgwick County Zoo
The Sedgwick County Zoo is a major attraction in Wichita, Kansas, and an AZA-accredited wildlife park. The Sedgwick County Zoological Society helped establish the zoo in 1971, and it quickly gained national and international recognition for its successful breeding and conservation programmers for rare and endangered species. With 3,000 animals representing nearly 400 species, the zoo has steadily increased visitor numbers and is now the state's number one exotic tourist attraction. The Sedgwick County Zoo is open from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. every day.
Gorilla Forest Downing
Downing Gorilla Forest begins with a small Congolese village putting on a show featuring monkeys, colobus monkeys, and pink and white pelicans. A bridge also has saddle-billed storks, black-crowned cranes, and okapi on display. Its main draw, however, is a large gorilla exhibit. They are typically found indoors, but can occasionally be seen outside through a large viewing window or in a cage.
The Plains' Pride
A path circles two lion, red river hog, and Meerkat exhibits. Each exhibit offers different perspectives from various angles. The entire area has a forest theme with massive boulders. At the end, there is an exhibition of African dog paintings.
