History
Tokyo Mayor Yukio Ozaki paid a visit to Washington, DC on March 27, 1912. As a friendly gift from Japan, he presented the city with Japanese cherry trees. Helen Heron Taft, wife of President William Howard Taft, and Viscountess Chinda Iwa, wife of Japanese Ambassador Chinda Sutemi, joined Yoshino on the north shore of the Tidal Basin in West Potomac Park on March 27, 1912. Link ] Yoshino Cherry trees have been planted. These two trees can still be found on the south side of 17th Street, near the John Paul Jones statue. From 1913 to 1920, 1800 Somi-Yoshino cherry trees imported from Japan were planted around the Tidal Basin. The remaining Yoshino trees, as well as 11 other cherry varieties, were planted.
