The Zoo's Conservation Program
The Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium in Omaha has established a robust scientific research programme in molecular genetics, reproductive physiology, nutrition, plant micro propagation, and conservation medicine. Through numerous in-situ and ex-situ projects and collaborations in conservation programmes, the work done here is intended to have a global impact. All of our programmes place a strong emphasis on student and professional development, technology transfer, and endangered species research.
The original three-story research building and attached veterinary medical facility contained 16,448 square feet and cost $2.4 million when it first opened in April 1996. Housing, an animal nursery, a surgery suite, several research laboratories, a student dormitory, and offices were all part of the facility.
Expansion
The $6 million expansion increased the facility's size by 175%. The expansion more than doubled the research area and added medical facilities, significantly improving the Zoo's ability to respond to national and international conservation needs. This expansion also allows the Zoo to provide more effective training for international students and colleagues.
