History

1800s

Glen Oak Zoo got its start in the late 1800s when the Peoria Park District received a herd of elk. The "zoo" moved several times over the next fifty years, eventually settling near the lagoon in Glen Oak Park.

1955

To create a more formal collection, Marlin Perkins, Director of the St. Louis Zoo and later star of Mutual of Omaha's Wild Kingdom, and local architect Cletis Foley were consulted. The current Glen Oak Zoo exhibits building first opened its doors in 1955.

1800s

The Zoo took on a more professional appearance, emphasising education, conservation, and recreation.

Friends of Glen Oak Zoo was formed and collaborated with the Peoria Park District to provide new animals and exhibits.

1976 Glen Oak Zoo became an accredited member of the American Zoo and Aquarium Association as part of its ongoing commitment to provide a quality attraction where people of ll ages can appreciate the wonders of nature.

1992

A community task force was formed to assess the Zoo's current state and make recommendations for its future. The zoo is an important part of our community; it should remain centrally located; and a master plan should be developed to provide guidance.

1997

To lead the effort for the new Zoo, the Peoria Zoological Society was formed. Torre Design Consortium was hired, and a Master Plan was completed and adopted after extensive community participation.

2002 

The Peoria Park District and the Peoria Zoological Society signed a contract for the Zoo's expansion,and fundraising efforts began.

2009

The Peoria Park District and the Peoria Zoo Society welcome you to Africa!

Barton

2012 

The Power of Play campaign reaches a new milestone with the opening of the Barton Pavilion. The Barton Pavilion is now the zoo's main entrance.

2015

With the opening of the Playhouse Children's Museum, the Power of Play campaign makes significant strides toward creating a "day long destination" in Glen Oak Park.
