Philbrook Museum of Art

Philbrook Museum of Art

The Philbrook Museum of Art is an art museum in Tulsa, Oklahoma, with formal gardens. The museum is housed in what was known in the 1920s as "Village Philbrook," the home of Oklahoma oil pioneer Waite Phillips and his wife Genevieve. The museum exhibits art collections from all over the world, covering a wide range of artistic media and styles, with a focus on Native American art, basketry, ceramics, paintings, and jeweler.

History

Philbrook Museum of Art Rotunda

The Philbrook Museum of Art opened its doors to the public on October 25, 1939, under the direction of its first director, Eugene King man, with a permanent collection of art drawn from the collections of the Tulsa Art Association as well as the Villa Philbrook. Art classes began in 1940, as did a school visitation programmer, which resulted in the addition of the Children's Museum in 1949. Due to increased demand for art classes, a new room was built in 1969, but its use has changed since then. The museum went through financial difficulties in the 1980s before reviving in the 1990s. The Philbrook Art Center's name was changed.

Gardens
The museum is surrounded by formal and informal gardens totaling 25 acres (93,000 m2). The expansive grounds, originally designed by Hare & Hare, contain elaborate gardens inspired by the Villa Lante, an Italian country house north of Rome designed by Giacomo Barozzi da Vignola in 1566. The formal gardens, with their canals and diagonal walkways connecting the mansion to the rustic pond below, adorned with a classical bandstand, were designed and built by the original owners. The gardens to the south of the property, which extend to the summer home, were designed later and finished in 2004. They include native Oklahoma plants as well as a creek. 7 This section contains Barry Flanagan's work Thinker in the Stone. 8
