Crocker Art Museum
The Crocker Art Museum (English: Crocker Art Museum, formerly Croker Art Gallery) is a California arts museum located in Sacramento. The museum houses one of the most important collections of Californian art. Works dating from the gold rush to the present day, European drawings and paintings, and one of the world's largest collections of ceramics from Asia, Africa, and Oceania can all be found.
History:-
Edwin B. Crocker, a wealthy banker and landowner , and Margaret Crocker began an important collection of paintings and drawings during a long trip to Europe in 1869. The trip came a year after the couple bought a space on Third and O Streets in Sacramento, California. The Crockers held social and civil titles as a prominent family in California.
Charles Crocker was a railroad magnate and one of the "big four." Judge Crocker's brother was a member of the State Supreme Court. When she presented the EB Crocker Art Gallery and its collection to the City of Sacramento and the Californian Association of Museums, Charles Crocker's wife realized her dream of establishing a public art museum. She stated:
Architecture
Judge Edwin B. Crocker purchased the houses on the corner in 1868. He then commissioned local architect Seth Babson (1830-1908) to redesign the house into a grand Italian-style mansion. Crocker also asked Babson to design and build a gallery to house the family's growing art collection, which would be located just beyond the mansion.
Babson envisioned the house and gallery as an integrated complex, each with its own design and materials. On the ground floor, there was a bowling alley, skating rink, and billiards room; on the first floor, there was a natural history museum and library; and on the second floor, there was a gallery space. The Crocker family mansion and gallery, completed in 1872, are considered architectural masterpieces.
